Huge props to the man.
He deserves it and his tears touched many a fan.

I wonder if Quickstep stopped chasing because of his imminent transfer
to their team.

His post stage interview was interrupted by the news that Romain
Feillu had crossed the line outside the time limit. Chavanel asked by
how much and when he was told 9 minutes, he had a big smile as if to
say, man I really went fast!

It touched me in a WWF kind of way. Two French riders breakaway on a
sprinters day but aren't caught. Go home team go!

Nobody deserves a win. Circumstances conspired.
In early days with Columbia riding to deliver
Cavendish, SC would have been shark food. I love
watching a breakaway swallowed whole.

The interview became even more strange when Jalabert asked him why he
wasn't riding in the Olympics, and Chavanel said because of the
pollution, that he had been hammered in Athens because of it and
didn't want to repeat. Then Jalabert kept insisting saying that there
would be pollution but also medals and that the pollution would be the
same for everyone, basically hammering the point that Chavanel is not
too bright.

In the entire tour who had the strength and savvy to
chase down a breakaway? CSC, but they never should have,
and did not. That leaves Columbia. Columbia devoured
breakaways. The rest of the "sprinters teams" are
non-starters. Pathetic.

Frankly, I think the French thing played against Roy. I think his only
chance to win the stage was to stop pulling through with 5km to go and
basically tell Chavanel that he had no other way to win, so if
Chavanel really wanted "his" stage he would have to do all the work
and hope to win the sprint anyway. Of course, this would either mean
them getting caught (kind of like what Horner did a couple of years
ago) or there being arguments or some other kind of unpleasantness.
Since it was French vs French, if Roy did this he would probably have
had problems finding a contract, no matter what the outcome.
