I'm not ready to ride a metric just yet, but I would like to get out and pedal for 30 miles or so this Saturday @ 8am from my house in Holly Springs. If anyone wants to join me at a 14-16-ish pace, let me know and we can work-out a central meeting spot somewhere in Holly Springs (near old Hwy 55 preferably).

My bet is that you can easily ride a metric, or at least an organized event metric where support and rest stops dominate the course and, there are cyclist riding at many different paces. I ride these events for pleasure and, I find these organized event metrics far easier than the typical club metric - where we tend to push the pace a bit and stop only once or twice.
At the Tour de Furniture last week, they had 5 rest stops on the metric route. You eat, drink, talk, maybe take pictures, rest up then hop on the bike for 10 to 15 miles then another rest stop. Granted, not all events have 5 rest stops on a metric course but, they will have several spaced out nicely on the route.
Its probably easier than you think.

Thanks for the encouragement, Neal. I actually have two reasons for not riding a metric this Saturday. One is my lack of confidence. The other is that my daughter needs to be picked-up from a friend's house before noon.

If I wasn't planning to do a 22 mile ride this afternoon and double that on Sunday morning, I'd sign up.
