After ten years with Patrick Lefevere's team, he and Paolo Bettini find they can't
come to terms on a contract for another year. Even if Lefevere is tight on money as
he seems to be saying he is, I'm surprised that he can't find the dough for PB. The
guy is a publicity magnet. He may not win with the same frwquency he used to but he
still gets ridiculous amounts of attention. So where to for Bettini?

He's a great bicycle racer, but a publicity magnet? Not in USA. OK..
bike racing.. USA.. big disconnect. He did a commercial for
Specialized? Cervelo? I can't remember.

My favorite Specialized commercial is the Boonen one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HygIMD4PzrQ If you know the area, you
can see that it was shot somewhere near the Pacific coast and
somewhere between Santa Cruz and Half Moon Bay, because of the
proximity to Specialized headquarters and the start of the Tour of
California in Palo Alto. I'm not extremely familiar with all the
roads, but I'm sure someone here can identify where he is riding.

The funny part is how they try to simulate the rough conditions of
Paris-Roubaix by laying out a couple of branches on the perfectly
smooth tarmac, it's true that most of the small roads around there are
beautifully paved. However, I just drove down West Alpine and it was
still pretty beat up and I assume that Tunitas Creek is in as bad a
shape as ever, so there were some more realistic choices available..

Exactly (heh). There's only one bike racer in the US, right? Anyway, I think
Bettini does still get a lot of attention in Europe. He is still a pretty big deal in
the peloton.

Could be Bear Creek or Native Sons, one of the dead-end roads that drops off
Skyline toward the coast, between Kings Mtn and 84.

It's hard to tell where that was shot. If it was done in the area near Specialized
(over near Gilroy), well, there aren't that many roads that I can recall that have
the level of tree cover seen in the ad. Maybe going up into Henry Coe (Dunne Ave.).
Otherwise, it could be on the coast side. Lots more opportunities there. Maybe one of
the upper sections of Eureka Canyon, Mountain Charlie Rd., 236 or Jamison Creek.
Greg's right to suggest Upper East Zayante. I know that Quick Step (and a few of the
other Euro teams) rode Tunitas Creek just before the ToC.

West Alpine is pretty rough but they seem to be repaving sections of it. Tunitas
Creek got a chip seal starting a little ways in from the coast and going up a bit
past Lobitos Creek. But the steep sections past that are still in really bad shape.
The last bit of OLH has gotten worse too.

There are a lot of roads that are not-so-good "up there." I haven't
lived there since 2001, but I think, for example, Zayante goes all the
way up, and it was pretty rough. I can't remember for sure if it was
Zayante or another road off it going up to the top. Closer to
Specialized was Mt. Madonna Rd, and it could be narrow and rough in
spots.
